Enablers: Come Out, Come Out, Where Ever You Are!

My head starts to pound. It suddenly dawns on me that I haven't had enough coffee. I say aloud, "Well, shoot. I've only had 1 cup today. No wonder I'm so tired. No wonder my head hurts." I rush to make myself another cup.

From the family room, I hear a little mister smarty-smart pants yell back, "Well, shoot. I haven't had any candy today. No wonder I can't clean my room. I need candy to stay awake. I need candy for energy?" He left the last part with a hopeful lilt. One look at my raised eyebrow dashed those hopes on the the rocks.

Mockery, thy name is pre-teen.

The mockery didn't stop me from gulping down my primary energy source. Luckily, I don't feel too bad. My friend, Debbie (everyone say, "Hi Debbie") sent me this enabling Yahoo news story that just rocks. Here are some of the highlights:
"Drinking more than three cups of coffee a day helped protect older women against some age-related memory decline..."

"The more coffee one drank, the better the effects seemed to be on (women's) memory functioning in particular. "

"They found that women who drank more than three cups of coffee per day, or its caffeine equivalent in tea, retained more of their verbal and -- to a lesser extent -- visual memories over four years."

" These women had a 33 percent lower odds of having verbal memory declines and 18 percent lower odds of having visual and spatial memory declines, compared to women who drank one cup or fewer per day. The effect also depended on age, with women over 80 reaping more benefits from these beverages than those who were 10 to 15 years younger..."

"It was unclear whether current or former coffee consumption made the difference. Some studies in mice have suggested that caffeine might block the buildup of proteins that lead to mental decline."

"[Researchers plan] to follow the women longer to see if caffeine delays the onset of
dementia -- the mental confusion that signals Alzheimer's disease and other brain disorders."

So there, I do need my caffeine, for my health!

Take that, Mr. Smarty-Smart Pants who shouldn't be reading this blog anyways!

P.S. I did notice this was published in Washington, home of the 'Bucks. We wouldn't be biased or anything, would we?

Oh my goodness I love this post!

I am a big-time coffee whore.

Any excuse! Thanks for posting this info, my kettle was boiling as I read it...

Okay, a super big thank you for posting that because now I feel ever so slightly less guilty for the caffeine I consume. Everytime I meet a nursing or pregnant mother who says "Oh, I'm on decaf" I want to smack her.
