Oh, Harry Giveway! This is Where I Admit My Lust For the One Who Must Not Be Named, The Dark Lord

I was a book worm in elementary school. Often I forewent playground antics to curl up in a corner to voraciously read my latest book.

It was definitely a form of escapism that I learned from my father. He constantly was ordering books and swapping good reads with neighbors. He still today often gets overwhelmed by family gatherings and chooses to find a quiet corner or go out to his car to read.

Like cooking, my mom wasn't a big reader, yet she encouraged me. I think she understood this similarity to my father.

My mom became my enabler, much to her regret when I would lock myself as a teenager in the bathroom to read.

I give large credit to my mom and Scholastic Books for getting me to Berkeley. Once I went through our family's extensive Box Car Kids, Nancy Drew, and Hollisters collection, I was starving for more.

There was never a school book order that didn't include several books for me, especially Beverly Cleary. I would get the class order form each month and I would carefully take my #2 pencil to circle every book that interested me.

At least 3/4 of the books would be circled. Mom? She let me get about half.

Although making ends meet with six kids on one salary was difficult at best, she always let me indulge in this simple pleasure. She couldn't drive, so the public library, over 5 miles away, was out. The school library was pathetic. Scholastic helped in that they made books affordable.

They had books for 99 cents. Today? They still do!

Today, when my kids go to school and come home with their Scholastic order sheets, I see they are still reasonably priced. Way less expensive than the local Barnes & Noble. They make reading accessible. Even better, the classroom gets free books for those unable to purchase. Win! Win!

Eldest also has benefited from their moderately priced wares. I indulged as my mother did, supplementing his love of Harry Potter, with favorites like Super Fudge and Magic Tree House Books. He was an early reader who loved a variety of levels. Yet, Harry Potter, having read the first volume in kindergarten at five years old, remains a favorite.

They've since been handed down begrudgingly for his 9 year old younger sister to absorb this summer. I am sure they'll eventually circulate to our youngest. It's funny to see our kids discuss the books with adult family member and neighbors alike. The series is truly ubiquitous.

So imagine my pleasure when Scholastic Books approached me with an offer to share my family's love of reading and Harry Potter with my readers and their families.

Yes, you! It's my and Scholastic's way of giving back.

Bonus? I get a set to give to PB so she isn't always fighting with Eldest to borrow his beloved Harry Potter classics.

I have FIVE sets of Harry Potter books to giveaway. Scholastic will ship them directly to your home for your family to enjoy.

Five (5) winners* will receive the following set in paperback:
  • Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone Book
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Book
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Each prize pack is worth $40
So how to decide? Hmmmm....think, think, think.
LOYALTY: One set will be awarded for loyalty. I will enter all those who have linked to my blog on their own site into a random drawing. Leave me the link to your blog in my comments and I will follow to your site to check you out.

FANDOM: Two sets I will award for fandom. Tell me your favorite Harry Potter moment from the books and why you or your children would like a set in comments. Two will be picked by my son, Eldest.

MEMORIES: Three sets will be awarded for the best moments photos of you, your children, or your family either reading any book or in Harry Potter costume. We'll vote on the winners as a family. Of course, my vote will break ties. Leave a link to the pic in the comments. I'll do a round up post with all the pics on a post in October.
So 1,2,3: You can enter in all three categories of contests. Leave a separate comment for each contest. Why not increase the odds? Heh! Can't hurt and perhaps you'll get some new readers of your own following the link.

Giveaway ends October 7th. Just in time to get them for you for Halloween.

*Once winners have been selected, I will notify you and ask for a shipping address which will not be used for anything other than to ship your books.

It's not much of a blog yet, but you're in my blogroll now :D

I've never read the Harry Potter books, but I'm not reading anything atm and now that I don't have to be a fanboy, waiting for the final book to come out, I figure I can read the series.

My favorite series was Redwall, which I imagine is a bit more violent than HP. It used to drive me insane, waiting for Brian Jacques to finish another book in the series...

ok though I don't want to win ( i have my own we loved and many times read collection..plus aren't family members always negated from the contests?) My favorite part is at the end of I believe the fourth book (isn't horrible my old brain can't keep the story separted by volume much less remember the titles) when Harry is fighting Voldemort and their wand beams (?) strike and hold each other. That whole fight scene was awesome and amazing and can only be rivaled by poor Dumbledors demise with frozen Harry having to watch. my favs...geez talking about it makes me wants to go start all over again.

Oh dear...This last one leaves me with plenty of options and a chance to Brag a bit. My oldest is loosely affiliated with a local costuming group called Mischief Managed. They do Harry Potter costuming. Most of the folk involved are also members of the 501st/Rebel Legion which does Star Wars costuming. Anyway, on to the pictures: The oldest and youngest at one of the book premiers: http://pics.livejournal.com/beki/pic/00056bt7/s640x480 The oldest with members of Mischief Managed: http://pics.livejournal.com/beki/pic/00038586 Getting mom into the act: http://pics.livejournal.com/beki/pic/0003785c/s640x480 Running the Harry Potter fan table at Norwescon 29 http://pics.livejournal.com/beki/pic/00068yyf Running the table at Norwescon 30 http://pics.livejournal.com/beki/pic/0009ca6r

I get a chance to brag either way. I've tons more pictures from things the group has attended.

My oldest just started reading the first Harry Potter book yesterday (and apparently stayed up half the night with a flashlight under the blankets). We own a few of them I bought for myself, but not all, so I'd love to win this. You already know I have you linked, but the blog is http://douglassdiaries.blogspot.com/

I am a HUGE Harry Potter fan. I've been interviewed by Momma Ruth after this last movie came out. http://mommaruthsays.blogspot.com/2009/08/harry-potter-q.html

Not to mention, I went to the midnight showing of the HBP movie with friends. We were the first ones to be seated for the 12:01 showing. I made my own tee shirt that said "GRYFFINDOR" and "POTTER" on the back in gold letters. Not to mention my red and gold nail polish. At the premiere, I helped with the Trivia game we played. Here's the link to all our pics. http://unfilteredinsanity.com/2009/07/longest-mostly-ww-ill-probably-ever-post-harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince-premiere/

I've read all the books 3 times. Listened to them on CD 3-4 times. I LOVE Harry Potter.

And, my favorite moment from any book has got to be Harry and Ginny's first kiss after Gryffindor won at Quidditch. So. INTENSE.

Don't know if writing about your heartbreaking dog story on Strollerderby counts, but there's a loyalty plug!

As for my devotion to Hogwarts, is it sad to say the candy is among my favorite parts of the books? Jelly Belly has tried, but they just can't give us Bertie Botts and chocolate frogs that are worthy of a kid's dreams.

For a more "adult" pick, the room of requirement, with its ability to transform to whatever use you require. I'm thinking half playroom/half office with a glass wall in the middle like they have in the police station. If she doesn't know I'm there, there's no "mommy, mommy, mommy, can I have milk? Mommy can I have TV? Mommy!!!!"

My daughter is just hitting the age where I can share the HP movies (the earlier ones), not yet at reading age, but I need to stock up now as she will be ready for chapter books as bedtime stories quite soon.

You are in my blog roll at http://www.donteatthepaste.com would you believe I can't find any of the pictures of my daughter at any of the movies or book parties? She always went in full costume, and will to the next movies. In fact, she's working on a basket full of wands to hand out to kids at the next movie! I did find this old entry explaining how I made her scarf. http://shala-beads.livejournal.com/4302.html
Favorite moment? Hands down when Neville was visiting his parents, and his mom passed him the gum wrapper. She was still trying to connect, and he accepted it and cherished it.

I loved the scholastic book order sheets!!I'm happy to hear that they still do that. Hopefully when my children are school age Scholastic will have continued to do that. My mom was the same way too. She really fueled my appetite for reading (although my list would always get cut in half too ^_^)

Oh what a great prize.. I love the Harry Potter books.. I actually was asked to read Book 1 by our local library.. They wanted my opinion as to what I thought about the book. It was at the time when it first came out and there was controversary. I read the first quickly, gave a great recommendation then bought my own copy and reread Harry Potter.. I have read them all and have passed them to my nephew who is now turning 13. He has read them each at least 2 times.
I would love to win these as I know another little guy who is just starting the Harry Potter books and what a great gift these would be for him.. (another nephew who is 5. His mom has been reading to him at night.. He loves it)
Thanks for the chance

Yes, I want to win but I admit I have never read a Harry Potter book yet. My family and I have seen movies (they're awesome) but not the books.

When the last book came out I was working on Mt. Saint Helens. We were camping up on the mountain in the restricted area that no one had probably camped in since 1980 eruption. Four of us had brought the book. What did we do on our free time... We read... Much to the disgust of our co-workers! Nothing will beat reading harry potter watching small steam eruptions and rock slides in the crater are bundled up with a flashlight in the tent at night!

Memories:
My son (now 16) age 7 dressed as a wizard to go to the midnight release of book 2, Mid July Pacific northwest, outside the bookstore pacing and waiting with all the grownup fans. He was freezing but firm in his conviction of staying until he could have it.
precious- thanks for bringing it back to me

I <3 Scholastic orders! I order from them each month for my classroom! I remember circling everything I wanted in my little catalog each month, and then haggling with my mom to try to get her to buy each one I wanted! (That never worked, by the way)

You are on my blogroll.

Favorite Potter moment?
I have so many, but probably the most magical are all from the 1st book when J.K. Rowling gets us hooked through descriptions of Diagon Alley, the Sorting Hat, latform 9 3/4, etc.

What would I do with the books? Open the doors to my students! I would add these books to my classroom library, of course!

OK, let's try this again...battery charged!

LOYALTY ENTRY: Unfortunately, I don't have a blog that I keep up with but I am a loyal reader and I always comment, if there is something I can add and you're on my blogroll. Also, I'm a loyal SU sharer and thumbs-uper!
(o0jocelyn0o on SU.)

FANDOM ENTRY: I've always wanted to read the series. I read Sorcerer's Stone in 9th grade but don't remember much of it as I was focused on main points for testing and essays at the time. This set would be for myself first but they will be put into my ever-growing book collection for my daughter to enjoy... after she learns how to read!

Maybe this one doesn't really qualify as a fandom entry but, I thought I'd try :)

JayInYoFace said...

Yes, multiple entries! You said it was allowed and I am taking advantage of that!

MEMORIES ENTRY: I've olnly read the first book and I'd have to pick the Potion's Test as a favorite but if I win a set I'll get back to you on that! :) I have loved reading since I was a kid. Growing up in a single parent home with 4 kids I rarely, if ever, had the chance to order from Scholastic. All of my books were borrowed from friends or the library. If I win a set, I will promptly read them, then put them into the small library I am building for my daughter to enjoy when she's older. She'll be able to make her own memories and read her little butt off!!

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THIS AWESOME GIVEAWAY!

Favorite Harry Potter Memory:
I have to say that this was reading the first book as my oldest was also reading it and being able to discuss a book with my child for the first time that we were both reading and having a meaningful discussion about it. I love to read and it made me so happy that he was showing interest (and continues to show interest) in being a reader for something besides school also. I think one of the best gifts I can give to the kids is a love of reading.

My favorite HP moment was when the sad Dobby thing happened and HP did you know what. :( I don't want to say what in case someone who hasn't read the series but plans to reads this comment :)

I ADORE the series. I don't have kids but I have a niece who is 9 and I know would really enjoy these as soon as she unglues herself from watching Hannah Montana that is :)

lcintocable[a]yahoo[d]com

I hope I win so that I can end up getting her the whole set by Christmas. It helps to win stuff especially when tuition is killing me :( (does guilt get one pints I wonder....) hehehe

Thanks so much for the opportunity!
