Boycotting Mr. Johnny Depp & Alice in Wonderland

Have you seen the trailers for Alice in Wonderland?

Looks fabulous, eh?

Just last night, I saw one during the Super Bowl and was so excited.

Today? Not so much.

Today I read this.

Today, I will not be taking my children to said movie.

Nope, not going to happen ever.

I don't want one dime to support wunderkind Johnny Depp.

Why?

He supports a child rapist. He supported Roman Polanski in an interview.

Yes, the same Roman Polanski that drugged, raped, and yes, sodomized a 13 year old child.

Same Roman Polanksi that has been able to evade prosecution from justice due to his celebrity and money.

As a mother, I am sickened that Johnny, as a father, thinks this is okay--forgivable even because Roman's an aged great director.

Source
"[Polanski] is not a predator. He's 75 or 76 years old. He has got two beautiful kids, he has got a wife that he has been with for a long, long time. He is not out on the street."

WTF? Yep, his sexy points account just went to zero.

Sad that a father cannot see justice is needed even decades after. A message needs to be sent that raping a child is always wrong even if you are very rich and famous and have the ability to flee prosecution.

Johnny? You are officially on my shit list.

Sorry, Disney. you might want to get Mr. Johnny Depp to rethink his position before you put him into any more movies for families.

Yes, I will be boycotting Alice in Wonderland.

Who is with me?

We need to send a message that:

Yes, rape is rape!

Why now? Justice knows no time.

I AM WITH YOU 100%. Thank you for bringing this up. I had no idea, my family probably wasn't going to see the movie anyway but now it is an emphatic NO NO NO!!!!!

I am with ya 100%. This disgusts me GREATLY.

I'm with you too. I might have seen it with my husband (not with my son), but now I'm not going to at all! This makes me ill!

I am so glad you hear you ladies are with me. This disgusts me.

Also, I just added the interview at the end of the post of what Johnny actually said.

Infuriated me more when he laughed and said "Why now?"

Would you be so callous Johnny if it was your daughter and a 46 year old mailman who anally raped her?

I think not.

Scout's Honor said...

One last thing, with the video, does anyone else want to smack the crap out of him to make him stop the ridiculous fake accent?

I mean come on.

I watched 21 Jump Street. that accent is so fake. So you have lived in France for a while that so does not justify Madonna syndrome, m'kay?

Shesh!

All of you are spreading lies. Johnny did NOT say that Roman was NOT a criminal.
Johnny was asked about the arrest and he in turned asked a valid question regarding the way Roman was arrested. WHY NOW? Why did the authorities in Switzerland wait 30 years to arrest Roman when he has been living and working there for 20 years. He was able to buy a house there and no one cared. Why didn't they wait until he until came home instead holding a phony awards show creating a media spectacle. If you really care about JUSTICE then this question is important. It is the fact that they waited so long one can conclude that they do not care about JUSTICE or the VICTIM. Those involved in the arrest did it possibly for money or some kind of deal to benefit themselves...as Johnny suggested. Also, saying someone is not a predator is not the same has saying someone is not a rapist. Roman has not been accused of any sexual crimes since the statutory rape charge. In light of the fact, Johnny knows Roman and his family on a personal level than either of you, I imagine Johnny has sympathy for Roman's wife and children. Even the the victim wants to put this behind and move on.

Oh and because I am imagine that there will be post of this sort as I have read them else where....for those of you wishing that Johnny's daughter to be sexually assaulted so that he will "learn" are even more disgusting than any "predator" out there.

Em said...

Wow anon - decaf tastes just as good as the real thing.

And anyone who wishes Johnny's daughters harm is an heartless idiot.

Scout - I did just see your Twitter about the Dodge commercial. I loved it, my favorite honestly - it's what I've always said about Hub's car - "his awesome ride for a beat down commute to a beat down job." What am I missing?

Jeanne Sager said...

Anonymous - you speak of justice, but simply put there is no justice in a world where a child rapist walks free. Period. It doesn't matter when or if the people who jail him get rich and famous off of doing it.

He raped a child. It's hard to find a crime any more disgusting.

Erin (Snarke) said...

I would just like to point out that, even though I did disagree with you on Twitter earlier today, that Anonymous is NOT me :)

Not that you would think it was, but in case there was any doubt :)

Anonymous said...

I am not Anonymous above either ;P

As I understand it, the Statute of Limitations applies to rape in the majority of U.S. states, but in some states an exception is made when the victim is a child? That is a bit problematic, legally. Status and age of the victim don't negate the reasons we have a Statute of Limitations in the first place, and they are valid. I wouldn't sleep better at night having prosecuted Roman Polanski, but that's not because I think rape of any kind is a minor crime.

MrsJCDeppII.. said...

I agree with Anonymous February 8, 2010 5:39:00 PM PST Johnny did not say Roman wasn't a rapist, all he asked was 'Why now'. ?

If you can go off a man just because he asks a simple question, then you've got to look into the situation more clearly & read between the lines.

Scout's Honor said...

Amelia: Statutes of limitation exist to limit the time for prosecution since finding clear and convincing evidence and witnesses is difficult decades after the fact. It is to protect the accused.

This is very different.

The facts are not in question. He, a 46 yr old man, raped, drugged, and sodomized a 13 year old child. He confessed, accepted a plea bargain, pled guilty, and was convicted of a lesser crime of unlawful sex with a minor instead of facing a trial for original charges of child rape and drug charges for the qualudes and alcohol he gave her.

So? There is nothing left to do but sentencing and hence statute of limitations does not apply here. The prosecution phase is complete. I feel very able to sleep at night. He was not wrongly convicted. No one's rights were violated. There is some evidence of judicial misconduct, but that is why there is the appeal system to protect that from happening.

Instead? He fled to Europe the day before sentencing.

Also, he went on after to have a notorious affair with a 15 year old: Natasha Kinski once in Europe. Who knows how many victims there have been over the years. Yes, he was (and as we know it's not curable) is a predator. Once a predator, always a predator.

In his 70's, is he a risk to others? Yes, because he serves as an example to other predators that you can get away with it even after being convicted if you flee. He is a very dangerous sign to future victims that justice will not be served and instead they will look at your sex life and victimize you again and? In the end, you will accept money from your abuser just to make it all go away.

If anything, his incarceration is a deterrent, but more importantly, it is justice for a crime he freely admitted.

As a mother to a 13 year old child, this is repugnant to me. As a father, I don't see how Johnny Depp is accepting of this. By his words, his chuckle, his smirk, and his ludicrous conspiracy theories, he clouds the issue that his friend is a child rapist and justice must be served. I would never wish harm on his children--just wish he would see it differently and imagine if his daughter was the victim.

In my eyes, you are either against Roman Polanski or you are for him.

Mrs. JPDepll: I will say again, any kind of defense of a child rapist is repugnant. If you are not against him, you are part of the problem. Johnny is part of the problem. Luckily there are people like Director Luc Besson who take another stand:

He says “I have a lot of affection for him, he is a man that I like very much but nobody should be above the law. I don’t know the details of this case, but I think that when you don’t show up for trial, you are taking a risk.” He also said if he had a 13-year-old daughter who was raped, he'd want the perpetrator brought to justice.

There there's the rest of Hollywood:

"John Horn and Tina Daunt write, "The criticism of Hollywood at the time was that in a business contingent on relationships and currying favor with the powerful, no one was willing to denounce such a prominent artist." Same deal here. As Silverstein told them, "I think people are afraid to talk in Hollywood. They are afraid about their next job." (Silverstein, an independent marketer of women's films, is very conscious that she's risking her own professional ass by speaking out, by the way.) When you've got people like Harvey Weinstein out there pushing the petition, bloviating about government irresponsibility and characterizing child rape as a "so-called crime," who's going to stand up to that?" and Whoopi saying it "wasn't rape-rape."

What the fuck? What planet do these celebrities we so highly esteem come from?

Thank god for celebrities like:

Jewel

Cokie Roberts

Jamie Foxx

Emma Thompson

Howard Stern (Yes, when he calls you out, it must be bad)

Drew Carey

Jamie Lee Curtis

Chris Rock

John Stewart

Dennis Miller

Lisa Kudrow

John Legend

Alison Sweetney & Jillian Michaels

Maybe we could put Jillian in a ring with good old Roman, eh? Better yet, I am quite sure she could take your precious pansy-livered Johnny Depp with her little pinkie.

Heh!

Are we talking about the same idiot Johnny Depp that chooses to live in France because he doesnt believe in the United States of America????

Regardless of his recent Polanski statements, this dude is a joke... ...period.

Those of you that continue to support Johnny Depp might as well jump on Osama bin Laden's bandwagon -- they both believe America is Evil.

matt said...

the united states of america is a fucking joke country, more importantly their is no reason to boycott a film that has nothing at all to do with roman polanski other than an actor in the film made a statement that does not agree with your own perception(s) on the situation where you didn't witness roman polanski punish penetrating a 13 year old and thus can't say if it happened or not without some small amount of uncertainty. albeit i will not attend this film in cinemas as i love the original fuck yeah animation. however i'm glad you're standing up for mothers everywhere and accomplishing fuck all you stupid insolent cunt.

Funny post at Shake - but nope, still thought the ad was good.

Maybe it's because my husband and I laugh at the little things that seem to beat down other couples. Making sure his favorite snack is in the pantry when he gets home from working all day while I raise our kiddos doesn't make me the ultimate in antifeminist. It just makes me nice.

Also probably since he bought me an awesome car before he bought himself one - yeah, that helps a lot too.

I worry for the future of my two sons.

Its unbelievable that we have people like the Matt and MrsJCD that get butt hurt when people dont agree with some moron actor?

Since when does acting mean that person has any more intelligence than a 3rd grader?

Johnny Depp is a moron, period.
For his comments on Polanski, for his views about the U.S.? No surprise... ...and no surprise mindless druids like Matt and MrsJCD speak up in his defense.

If either of you are presently in the U.S., and I suspect you are, it wouldnt be surprising to find both of you mindless imbeciles living off the welfare system of the country you both seem to hate.

If our system is so horrible to your fragile senses? LEAVE You're both useless wastes of time anyway, you wont be missed...

With love and kisses!!!

I live in canada, technical analyst/network admin currently going to university. This article is a waste of time in her efforts she achieves nothing by boycotting this flick nor does it deliver any form of value to the reader - outside of a false sense of security based on incoherent connections. Had Romand Pedofile Polanski directed the film maybe you'd have something it would send a message. Unfortunately the director is Tim Burton who hasn't been that great since 1994, UUUUHHHHHMMEERRRRKAAAHHH

^^ This has obviously taken on a life of its own but in reply to Scout - it's far too simple to say he "plead guilty" to rape. He didn't. Your version of events is over-simplified and inaccurate. The facts are very much in doubt. Statutory rape/unlawful sexual connection and rape are not the same crime. He accepted a plea bargain as many do for a whole host of possible reasons. He plead not guilty to rape and the other initial charges. The case was fishy from the beginning. In addition to that he encountered some sort of rogue judge did he not, who was set to go against every recommendation made that RP not serve jail time, almost on principle and essentially because of who RP was? I'm not sure that's just. The victim has changed her story numerous times and also pursued him financially. She is an opportunist, a liar, and once was a Lolita it would seem. How can we know after all this time where the truth may lie? What is really needed, a re-examining of the evidence, is not possible. Far from getting away with something due to his fame, RP is being scapegoated because of it, and for the second time it would seem. That is always something to question and that is what JD was doing - questioning.

Statutory rape is a notoriously difficult and problematic area of the law to deal with justly. It is widely recognized as such. Often, as is the case at this time, the 'victim' wants the case dropped. It is not a 'hang 'em high and don't think twice' area of the law. That is not justice.

Eager and greedy hatred and contempt for those who have contributed oceans more than the rest of us put together, but allegedly fallen foul of the law or of 'morality,' does not sit well with me. Smacks of simplemindedness and hypocrisy. Perhaps we should string them all up, JD & RP & all of them, and endlessly praise ourselves for leading our small pedestrian lives. I'm not sure the world would be a better place.

maffew said...

Hey guy, the US, Canada, and the UK is the same shit. Americans are just dumb as fuck and brain washed into thinking their country is running not just fine but better than all the rest. Our economies are near identical, capitalism (the base) which influences our governments (the superstructure) and at times via laws/bills the superstructure influences the base; it's cyclical. When you have a band of international banks such as JP Morgan / Chase Financial that has well over 5000 branches (in the U.S. alone) each with a paltry ten million in them you have yourself an absolutely corrupt system.

You come to my country Matt, Ill have your half-wit, retard ass DEPORTED! Beauty 'eh?

Anonymous said...

Wow, this has turned into a ridiculous argument over which country sucks the most... can we get back to the article itself without being extremely insulting?

Anyway, I'm not the biggest fan of Johnny Depp, but he never really said, "Oh yeah, I'm a fan of child rape." He just made a small statement (imo, not that controversial) about someone he has worked with before, who probably is not a predator at 75. Polanski is pretty messed up, I'll give you that. Who wouldn't be after his pregnant wife and friends were brutally murdered by the Manson family? Not an excuse for his behavior, but Polanski is not the same as Johnny Depp.

Jesse said...

Cry me a river. If I didn't see a movie based on a performers thoughts on a crime he/she themselves did not commit, I WOULDN'T LEAVE THE HOUSE. Don't go see Polanski's movies, it's ignorant and irrelevant to not see Depp's.

practical(ly) Mom(me) said...

OK- those of you who are cursing and calling each other out it's time for a truce. People, all Scout said was she will not financially endorse an actor, as popular as JD is, for his support of a admitted rapist.

Celebrities constantly endorse products, politicians, philosophies and it is a long held tradition to boycott said products, politicians, athletes or celebrities when they have stepped of the moral center. JD is literally excusing Rapist Polanski. There is something deeply wrong with that line of thinking.

I'd like to see him explain to his daughters what he meant by his comments though. I'm sure JD will have a change of heart when his daughters come of age and dirty old men are stalking them down.

Seriously, Rape shouldn't be debatable and Scout has made a point here.

MrsJCDeppII.. said...

I am not disputing that Scout made a valid point.

What I don't agree with is the fact that she is trying to get everyone to boycot Johnny Depp films.

She can boycot them if she wishes to, but, she should not tell everyone else to.

Everybody has their own opinions.

It is not Johnny Depp who commited the crime, it is Roman Polanski so it should be his films that she should be boycotting, not Johnny Depps.

What a pathetic little life you must have.

Personally, I never cared for the greasy dude in the first place. His reaction in the video was just icing on the cake of shit that tells me he's not my type. Now, on the other hand, my mom is *in love* with the guy and has a framed poster of him IN HER HOUSE!
