Beyonce and Lingerie-Clad Little Girls: So Very Wrong

Have you seen this yet? Watch it. I'll wait...

Remember when I got all up in arms about H&M's sexy kids campaign? My reaction this time?

Well at least H &M kids were clothed.

Have the parents of these little eight year olds who are wearing suggestive, lingerie style costumes and bumping, grinding and gyrating to Beyonce, lost their ever living minds?

Where were their parents? Where do we draw the line at inappropriate?

One parents said this was all a matter of context and that their routine at a dance competition was never meant for a national audience.

Sweetheart? These days, if it's recorded, it's online and once online, it's there to stay.

My opinion? These parents have neglected their parental obligation to protect their young children. To me? This is beyond questionable taste and more in line with child protective services.

Seriously.

Remember my post on my ladybug toes this morning. I didn't mention the really lewd and lascivious comments my husband received. My friends? There are really sick people out there.

As a blogger, I can handle it because I am a grown adult and I have chosen to blog. However, these kids? These baby girls?

I can only imagine what salacious motivation this video gives to child predators.

and will you take the video off at some point to support the viewpoint that people shouldn't be watching these babies dancing like strippers?

How 'bout simply banning video cameras from these competitions? As you said, once recorded, it's online. So much for "never meant to viewed by millions".

The difference between "dance costume" and "sexy outfit" is obvious to anyone who gives a fig about 8- and 9-yr-old girls not being seen as sex objects. I can think of any number of costume designs that would've been infinitely more age-appropriate but still allowed freedom of movement.

I read another article about this (they are all over) and generally, surprisingly, the parents approved. It is after all their right to allow their children to do this if they think the experience is enriching. The parents cited the fact that the children don't know about sexuality and so just think it's fun to dance that way as justification.

People sexualizing it should probably have their heads examined because they might be pedophiles.

Anonymous: That horse has left he gate. This has been blasted on ABC, CBS, CNN, The view, etc. I think at this point, everyone in the western world can see this if they so desire. So, yes, I posted the video to illustrate my point. I guess I could have just provided a link to any of those national news organizations, but really at this point it serves more as a potent beware to future dance parents that putting your kids in inappropriate lingerie and gyrating hips, lifting legs in the air, and gyrating pelvises may be ill-advised and the effects will be longer lasting than ever realized.

Curious though why you posted anonymous?

Opposing, polite viewpoints are always welcome here.

JamaGenie:

If you watched the parents, I think they saw nothing wrong so I doubt banning videotapes would be a viable option to them and there is always the cell phone that makes it impossible to ban anything recording devices anymore.

Yes, the outfits to me were the most egregious.

Betazed:

Yes, I guess I was asking where were the parents were, not the people who gave birth to them who don't seem to care that they dressed their little girls like prostitutes and had them mimic sexualized dance moves.

As for sexualizing it being on the behalf of the viewer? That is a very interesting, and I think minority viewpoint. How can one not? The national newscaster, mainstream media, and tons of bloggers are all reading it the same. Anyone who doesn't see this as sexualized has a very naive perspective.

All: Thanks for commenting.

What I wonder most is where are their fathers. Sadly and unfortunately some otherwise vaguely normal women do lose their minds when it comes to dance/competitions/pageants but I cannot in one million billion trillion gobsmacking brain dead light years imagine my husband letting our daughter (if we had one) participate in that, even if I had temporarily lost my mind.

The costuming was most definitely inappropriate for the age of the girls. There are one=piece options that would allow for "freedom of movement" w/out baring bellies.

As for the style of dance, there were a few moves I could've done w/out but just like the H & M video, it's all in interpretation. This one was a ton more suggestive and I personally would object to my daughter participating in a performance like this in front of anyone, whether it's taped or not is beside the point. You can't control the pedophiles in the audience either so if you think something is borderline inappropriate, than it probably is.

Like you said, a duck is a duck is a duck.

I have posted on this as well and agree totally.
People who downplay the seriousness of this sort of thing are not living in the real world. The real world is not all puppies and unicorns. It has many nasty people who view children in an inappropriate way and it is sad that this dance routine fills their needs.
I know of a few professionals who have had TV commercials removed because of the way they portrayed children.
Bad things happen when good people don't speak up.

I recently had dinner with a girlfriend and her 13 year old daughter. In the middle the Mom asked her daughter if she would mind stopping texting while we ate and asked what was so important that it couldn't wait. Her daughter said " We are talking about not having sex yet." They had only just started going out and weren't ready yet. Great right? Well, not really. It was said in the context like they were mulling it over as to when.

13 PEOPLE!

This video, the movements, the costumes, the attitudes and ignorance of the parents, that is how they are casually mulling it over at 13....What they are learning at 8 leads them to having sex or rainbow parties or sexting or whatever at 13.

Wow.
These parents don't seem to get it. They seem pretty naive to me. There are other ways to showcase your daughter's amazing talent. And let's be fair. There was some amazing dancing in that routine. But bikinis and grinding?! I wanted to smack that mom when she went on about "ease of movement". Give me a f$#%ing break! There are a TON of other costumes that they could have worn that would have done the exact same thing! Even Beyonce' wore a leo in her video! She had on more clothes than those girls!
The kids may be completely innocent and clueless as to the controversy. They just hear a poppin song and want to dance, maybe win a contest. It's the parents and the choreographer who need a serious smack.
