Motherhood: Raising Daughters in Despicable Times

Just when I relax a bit as a mother of a gorgeous baby girl, something comes along that whacks me up side of my head.

Could it be the reports of a woman raped in an airport with no bystanders coming to her aid?

Might it have been the report of a mere SEVEN year old girl getting plastic surgery because of bullying?

Both those cases send shivers up my spine as a mom who just wants to protect her beautiful daughter.

However, most likely, it was this:

Yes, this is actually being sold in 21st century America. It breaks my heart.

My friends, we justifiably gasp at the horrors done to women in the Middle East, but please don't let down your guard here. I am guilty of it because I live in an educated, wonderful, enlightened community in the Seattle area. We just don't seem to have that kind of evil here. I didn't see it much in California, but my short stint for the Army in the south? Sadly, I saw many a confederate flag. However, these stickers just seem so much worse.

Yes, here America, we still have work to do. I want my daughter to be able to marry whomever she loves--any race and any gender--when she grows up and not worry where she should live to be safe from other's judgments and hate.

Don't you wish the same for every girl?

Oh no! Is that for real?? That's terrible! I suppose we all have a tendency to spend our time with like-minded individuals who share many of our same values. It's then hard to imagine that there truly are people out there with ideas so drastically different from our own. My 11 year old daughter recently said something about how racism doesn't exist anymore. We had to have a conversation about how it DOES exist, she's just fortunate not to be exposed to it.

Sadly, it is for real and being sold on a so-called Christian website in Arkansas. Sickening, yes?

My daughter feels the same as your daughter. in fact, until my travels to some of the bung holes of the US, I thought in my Berkeley/California la-la land that this type of racism didn't exist.

Good idea about having a conversation. I think I'll do the same with all my kids this afternoon. We may not associate with people like this, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Unfortunately I regarded this as Ho hum been there seen that have you been down south. I know mixed race folks (KING Asian) who won't go to Silverwood Idaho because of the treatment their friends received there. With regard Silverwood I had no idea because I am the Caucasian mother of three Swedish descent children. However in certain parts of England I would not speak out loud because I have an Irish accent. When i was visiting London most presumed I was the Irish nanny and not the mother. I had an uncle walking with his grandchild who could not defend someone because he had his grandchild with him and knew if he spoke with his accent the skin heads would
attack them both.
I am very aware that The US is very racist. I like to think that America is the land of the free.

stupid people who would be lucky to procreate with other races. that's the problem they're too inbred. yes, I want my children to find love when it blindsides them- be it white, black, or green.
